Coilovers by Car: Fitment Guide for Trucks and Cars

There's no true adjustable coilover for the Crown Victoria - its Panther-platform rear end (1998-2011) rides on air springs, not a strut. What gets sold under that search term is an air-to-coil conversion kit, such as Strutmasters' FA3RB, that swaps failed air bags for a standard coil spring and shock at stock height.

This hub tracks coilover fitment for the trucks, SUVs, and cars we get asked about most - Tacoma, 4Runner, Frontier, Titan, F-250, Ranger, Ram 2500, Tahoe/Suburban, Honda CR-V, the MK3 Supra, and the Jetta - with the exact generation, kit, and source for each.

Match the chassis code, not the model name

On unibody cars, a coilover is a straight strut-and-spring swap, so fitment runs by chassis code rather than model year. The Honda CR-V spans RD1/RD2, RD4/RD5, RE1/RE7, RM1/RM4, and RW1/RW8 generations, the MK3 Toyota Supra is its own A70 chassis separate from the A80 and GR Supra, and the Jetta's strut towers changed enough between MK5, MK6, and MK7 that a kit for one rarely bolts into another. The same logic applies to a Honda Civic or any other car on this list - confirm the chassis code on the listing or your VIN before ordering, not just the model-year range in the title.

Trucks that already run a factory strut

Some trucks and SUVs make this easier because the factory front end is already a strut-and-coil assembly, so an aftermarket unit bolts into the same mounts. That covers Tacoma and 4Runner builds, where Bilstein 6112 struts and ICON's Stage 1 system both reuse the stock location, and the Nissan Frontier and Titan, where King and ICON sell direct-fit 2.5-inch coilovers. These kits are front-only - the rear axle on every one of these trucks still rides on leaf springs, so plan for separate rear shocks if you're changing stance at both ends.

When 'coilover' means a full conversion kit

Other trucks never had a coilover to begin with. The F-250's twin I-beam or radius-arm front end, the Ford Ranger coilover conversion crowd's torsion-bar front, and the Tahoe/Suburban's torsion-bar 4WD IFS all need a conversion kit - new brackets, a coilover shock, and often a different control arm - in place of the stock setup. These are usually sold and marketed as lift kits, not lowering kits, and cost more than a direct-fit coilover because they change suspension geometry instead of swapping one assembled corner. The Ram 2500 coilover conversion follows the same pattern on its radius-arm front end. The Ram 1500 is a different platform with its own options - see Ram 1500 lowering kits and Ram 1500 air suspension instead of assuming a Ram 2500 kit fits.

What to check before you order

Confirm three things before buying any coilover or conversion kit: the exact chassis code or generation rather than the model-year range on the listing, two-wheel-drive versus four-wheel-drive (IFS and solid-axle trucks use different brackets, and some kits are 4WD-only), and whether the kit ships assembled or needs a coil spring compressor to build. If the same search term turns up both true coilovers and a conversion kit with a completely different job - like the Crown Victoria - read our coilovers vs. struts and shocks breakdown first so you buy the part that actually does what you want.

FAQ

Is there a real coilover kit for the Crown Victoria?
No. The Crown Victoria's rear suspension uses air springs, not a strut or shock that coilover hardware replaces. The closest product is an air-to-coil spring conversion kit, which restores stock ride height rather than lowering or raising the car.
What's the difference between a coilover and a suspension conversion kit?
A coilover is a direct swap: spring and shock in one assembled unit that bolts where a factory strut already sits. A conversion kit is bigger - it replaces torsion bars, radius arms, or leaf springs with new brackets built to accept a coilover shock, which is why F-250, Ranger, and Tahoe/Suburban kits cost more and take longer to install than a Tacoma or CR-V coilover.
Do I need a 2WD or 4WD specific coilover kit?
Yes on trucks and SUVs. Independent front suspension (IFS) trucks like the Tacoma, Frontier, and 4WD Tahoe use different brackets and shock lengths than their 2WD, solid-axle counterparts, so a kit sold for one drivetrain generally won't fit the other.
Can coilovers lower a truck that has leaf springs?
Not on their own. A leaf-spring rear axle needs a lowering block, shackle, or spring swap - a front coilover or conversion kit doesn't change the rear ride height, so trucks like the Ranger or F-250 need separate rear-end parts to match a lowered front end.
