Coilovers · Fitment guide

Coilovers for Subaru WRX and STI

A coilover for the WRX replaces the factory strut and spring as one adjustable unit, letting you set ride height and, on most kits, damping. Fitment splits into four distinct platforms - GD/GG (2002-2007), GR/GV (2008-2014), VA (2015-2021), and VB (2022+) - so a coilover for a 2015 WRX will not bolt onto a 2002 or a 2022 car.

This page lists kits by generation with manufacturer part numbers, published drop ranges, and the alignment work each platform needs after lowering.

WRX and STI coilover generations

Four U.S.-market generations define coilover fitment: GD/GG (2002-2007, WRX hatchback and sedan plus STI from 2004), GR/GV (2008-2014, STI hatchback GRB through 2010 then sedan GVB/GVF through 2014, alongside the WRX), VA (2015-2021, WRX and STI share one sedan body, chassis codes VA1 for WRX and VA2 for STI), and VB (2022 onward, WRX only - Subaru has not brought the STI back on this platform). A coilover kit replaces the factory strut and spring with a threaded body and adjustable perch, and that mounting interface is generation-specific even where the bolt pattern looks similar.

What drop to expect, by platform

On the GD-era cars (2002-2007), KW's Variant 3 is rated for 1.2-2.1 inches of front drop on the 2002-2003 WRX, 1.2-2.1 inches front and 0.9-1.8 inches rear on the 2004 STI, and 0.8-2.0 inches front with 0.4-1.5 inches rear on 2005-2007 WRX/STI - the window narrows as the factory geometry gets stiffer through that generation's run.

On the 2008-2014 GR/GV cars, Fortune Auto's 500 Series and BC Racing's BR Series cover both the GRB hatchback and the later GVB/GVF sedan under separate part numbers; published drop figures vary by series, so check the listing for your exact body style. The 2015-2021 VA cars narrow KW's Variant 3 window to 0.6-1.4 inches front and 0.2-1.4 inches rear, reflecting the stiffer VA chassis, while Godspeed's MonoSS for the same VA2 STI runs a 10 kg/mm front and 8 kg/mm rear spring rate on an adjustable perch. The 2022+ VB WRX has its own part numbers across every brand - Tein's Flex Z for the VB is a distinct kit from the VA-generation Street Basis Z.

Alignment, camber, and tire clearance

Lowering a WRX or STI moves the control arms and strut angle out of their designed range, which shows up as added negative camber and reduced bump travel before fenders or wiring harnesses get close to the tire. Forum consensus among long-time NASIOC owners puts a comfortable daily-driver drop around 0.5 to 1.5 inches; pushing toward the top of a kit's adjustment range, close to 2 inches on GD or GR-era kits, usually means budgeting for camber bolts or camber plates and an alignment shop that understands lowered AWD Subarus, not just a stock-spec alignment.

Because ride height interacts with spring preload and damper setting, re-check corner weights and alignment after the car has settled for a few hundred miles rather than immediately after install.

Choosing a kit for your WRX or STI

Entry-level twin-tube kits, such as Godspeed MonoSS or Tein Street Basis Z, cover ride-height adjustment at a lower price point and suit a WRX that is mostly driven on the street. Mid-tier monotube kits, such as BC Racing BR/DS or Fortune Auto 500, add independent damping adjustment, which matters more once an STI sees track days or autocross. Installation is a standard strut swap on all four generations, though GD and GR-era cars will often need new strut mounts and sway bar end links at the same time given the age of the factory hardware.

What a 1" drop looks like

A 0.75-1.25 inch drop front and rear keeps most WRX and STI generations inside their factory alignment range and tire clearance. Adjustable kits like KW's Variant 3 publish factory-rated windows from roughly 0.6 to 2.1 inches depending on generation, with the top of that range needing camber correction.

FAQ

Do WRX and STI use the same coilovers?

Often yes within a chassis generation, since the WRX and STI share the same unibody and strut mounts. Spring rates usually differ, though - STI kits tend to run stiffer to match the heavier AWD hardware and wider track - so match the part number to your trim rather than assuming a WRX kit carries STI-intended rates.

Will a 2022+ WRX (VB) coilover fit my 2015-2021 VA WRX or STI?

No. The VB platform introduced for 2022 uses different front strut hardpoints than the 2015-2021 VA generation, and Subaru has not offered an STI version on the VB platform. Tein's Flex Z for the VB and similar VB-specific kits will not fit a VA car, and a VA kit will not fit a VB.

How much can I lower a WRX or STI before alignment or clearance becomes a problem?

Owner discussion on forums such as NASIOC generally lands on roughly 0.5-1.5 inches as a daily-driver range; adjustable kits such as KW's Variant 3 publish factory-rated windows in that same band across generations. Pushing toward 2 inches or more typically eats into bump travel and pushes camber and caster outside a shop's normal alignment spec, so plan on camber bolts or plates at that point.

What's the best coilover for a WRX that's still driven daily?

For a daily-driven WRX, a twin-tube or monotube kit with a wide damping range and a street-friendly spring rate - BC Racing BR, Godspeed MonoSS, or Tein Street Basis Z - gives adjustable ride height without track-oriented stiffness. STI owners who also track the car typically step up to something like Fortune Auto 500 or KW Variant 3 for more damper adjustability.

Do 2002-2003 WRX coilovers fit a 2004-2007 STI?

Not as a universal rule. KW, for example, lists separate part numbers for 2002-2003 WRX, 2004 STI, and 2005-2007 WRX/STI because spring rates and mounting details change between those model years even within the same GD-generation body. Confirm the part number against your exact model year rather than assuming a GD-era kit is interchangeable across all of them.
