Coilovers - By car

GR86, BRZ & FRS Coilovers: Fitment by Generation

GR86 coilovers are height- and damping-adjustable suspension kits that replace the factory struts and springs on the 2022-2026 GR86 and BRZ (ZN8/ZD8), or the 2013-2020 FR-S, BRZ, and 86 (ZN6/ZC6). Most kits adjust ride height about 0.8 to 2.0 inches front and rear, with camber plates to correct alignment after lowering.

Two different cars share this page

The nameplate has gone through two unrelated chassis. The 2013-2016 Scion FR-S, first-generation Subaru BRZ (ZC6, 2013-2020), and 2017-2020 Toyota 86 share one platform and the same coilover fitment. The 2022-2026 Subaru BRZ (ZD8) and Toyota GR86 (ZN8) are a newer chassis with their own separate coilover part numbers. A kit built for one generation does not bolt onto the other, so match the part number to your exact model year before ordering.

What drop to expect

KW lists a 0.8-2.0 inch adjustable range front and rear for its V3 Clubsport kit on the 2013-2020 FR-S/BRZ/86, which is a reasonable window for most street-driven builds on this chassis. Megan Racing and Fortune Auto publish spring rates rather than a drop figure for their kits; a similar 1-2 inch range at a street-friendly ride height is typical before going lower starts eating into suspension travel and alignment range. For a side-by-side against simpler lowering springs, see our coilovers vs lowering springs guide.

Alignment, camber, and tire clearance

Dropping either generation changes camber and toe, so budget for a full alignment after install. KW's kit for the first-generation chassis ships with adjustable front camber plates to bring camber back into spec at lower ride heights; confirm whether a given kit also adjusts rear camber, since this platform has less built-in rear range than the front. Going much past about 1.5 inches of drop typically calls for camber bolts or arms to avoid uneven tire wear. See our guide on how to adjust coilovers for ride-height and damping setup after install.

Picking a kit for your generation

For the 2013-2020 FR-S/BRZ/86, Megan Racing's Spec-RS and KW's V3 Clubsport sit at opposite ends of the budget: Megan's kit is a street-focused 10 kg/mm front and rear setup, while KW's 2-way adjustable Clubsport is a track-oriented kit with independent rebound and compression control. For the 2022-2026 GR86/BRZ (ZN8/ZD8), Fortune Auto's 500 Series Gen 8 is a custom-valved option backed by a 5-year warranty. Installation time and labor cost are covered in our coilover installation and cost guide. FAQ

Do coilovers for the 2022+ GR86 fit the older FR-S or BRZ?

No. The 2022-2026 GR86 and BRZ (ZN8/ZD8) use a different chassis than the 2013-2020 FR-S, first-generation BRZ, and 86 (ZN6/ZC6). Coilovers are sold separately for each generation and the mounts are not interchangeable.

How much drop is realistic for a street-driven BRZ, FRS, or 86?

KW's V3 Clubsport for the first-generation chassis is adjustable from 0.8 to 2.0 inches front and rear, and most street builds land in that range rather than at the extreme low end, which eats into suspension travel and alignment adjustment.

Do I need camber plates after lowering?

Most kits built for this platform, including KW's V3 Clubsport, include adjustable front camber plates specifically to correct the camber change that comes with lowering. Plan on a full alignment regardless of how far you drop the car.

What do coilovers cost for this platform?

At the time of writing, Megan Racing's Spec-RS kit for the first-generation chassis lists around $1,599, and Fortune Auto's 500 Series Gen 8 for the 2022-2026 GR86/BRZ runs $1,928-$2,328 depending on spring choice. KW's 2-way adjustable V3 Clubsport sits well above both at roughly $4,864.

Are coilovers better than lowering springs for this car?

Coilovers add independent ride-height and often damping adjustment that lowering springs do not, at a higher price; springs are the simpler, cheaper way to drop this chassis a fixed amount.

Does the Scion FR-S use the same coilovers as the Subaru BRZ?

Yes. The 2013-2016 Scion FR-S, first-generation Subaru BRZ (2013-2020), and Toyota 86 (2017-2020) share the same chassis, so coilovers like Megan Racing's Spec-RS and KW's V3 Clubsport list all three together under one part number.
