Jeep Coilover Kits: JK, TJ, XJ, YJ, JL & Gladiator
A Jeep JK coilover conversion kit replaces the factory strut-style front shocks (and often the rear shocks) with true coil-over-shock units from brands like ICON, Fox, AccuTune, or JKS, giving 0 to 6 inches of adjustable lift instead of one fixed spring rate. Front kits usually bolt to the stock lower mount; rear kits often need new upper mounts.
This page also covers coilover conversions for the TJ, XJ, YJ, JL, and Gladiator JT, since bracket design and lift range vary a lot by generation.

How a JK coilover conversion works
The factory Wrangler JK front suspension uses a coil spring and a separate strut-style shock. A coilover conversion swaps that shock for a coil-over-shock, where the spring rides on the shock body itself. That lets you set ride height by adjusting spring preload instead of being locked to one spring's free length, and most coilover shocks also give more up-travel than the stock unit once the vehicle is lifted. See what are coilovers and coilovers vs struts and shocks for how this differs from a strut or a leaf-spring shock.
Front kits from ICON, AccuTune, and JKS are built to bolt to the JK's existing lower shock mount, so the front conversion is largely a direct swap. Rear coilover kits are a bigger job: because the JK doesn't have a rear shock tower designed for a coilover's wider body, most rear kits (AccuTune's rear kit included) ship with new mounting brackets or hardware to relocate the upper mount.
JK coilover kits and lift ranges
ICON sells its JK coilover conversion in stages tied to a lift range rather than one fixed kit: a 0-4" kit (part 22003), a 1.75-4" Stage 1 system (K25011), and a 4.5-6" Stage 2 system (K25042), all for 2007-2018 4WD JKs. AccuTune's front kit uses 12" travel King or Fox coilovers and is quoted at 2.5" to 6" of lift while keeping about 5" of usable up-travel, with the shock custom-tuned per vehicle weight. JKS's bolt-in front conversion is a shorter-lift option: 2" on 4-door JKs and 2.5" on 2-door JKs, for 2007-2017 trucks, built around its own coilover shock rather than a lift-stage system.
2-door and 4-door JKs carry different weight at the rear axle, which is why lift figures split by body style on several of these kits rather than being one number for the whole JK line.
Coilover conversions for TJ, XJ, and YJ
The TJ, XJ, and YJ predate the JK's coil-sprung front end in some cases, so the conversion path looks different per platform. Rock Krawler's catalog covers all three: its 3.5" X Factor Coil Over System is a long-arm setup for 1997-2006 TJs that replaces the factory short-arm geometry along with the springs, and its YJ Trail Runner Stage 1 long-arm kit for 1987-1995 YJs runs 14" travel, 2.625" remote-reservoir coilovers front and rear for roughly 4.5" of lift.
The XJ Cherokee is different again: the factory front end is already coil-sprung, and it's the leaf-sprung rear that gets converted. Rock Krawler's rear coil conversion for 1990-2001 XJs swaps the leaf pack for a coilover-based rear end rated for 4.5" to 6.5" of lift. Because XJ and TJ long-arm and rear-conversion kits move control-arm geometry, not just ride height, they're a bigger install than a JK front bolt-in and are usually sold as part of a full lift kit rather than a standalone shock swap.
JL Wrangler and Gladiator JT coilover kits
The newer JL (2018-2025) and Gladiator JT (2020-2025) share a front suspension design, so several brands sell one front coilover kit for both. JKS's coilover conversion kit, built around Fox 2.5 DSC shocks, is sold for the JL and Gladiator front axle and lines up with the 2-5" lift range on 4-door JLs and 3.5-5" on 2-door JLs that JKS quotes for its coilover-based systems. Rock Krawler sells a Gladiator-specific 4.5" X Factor Coil Over System with triple-rate coils and 2.625" remote-reservoir coilovers front and rear, built as a full lift kit rather than a front-only conversion.
Alignment, camber, and tire clearance after a lift
Any coilover kit that changes ride height changes caster and camber, so a front-end alignment is standard practice after install on every platform here, not just the JK. Long-arm systems like Rock Krawler's TJ and YJ kits move the control-arm angles more than a bolt-in JK front kit does, which is part of why they're sold with adjustable arms rather than relying on factory geometry.
Tire and wheel backspacing matters too: Rock Krawler specs its TJ coilover upgrades against a minimum wheel measurement, and a lift that clears 35s on a stock-width JK can still rub on 37s depending on fender flares and backspacing. Lifted Jeeps also stress the sway bar end links more at full articulation; see Jeep sway bars and Jeep sway bar links for parts sized for a lifted ride height.
Which coilover brand fits your budget and use
ICON and AccuTune both sell staged or custom-tuned King/Fox-based systems aimed at daily-driven JKs that still see trail use, while JKS's bolt-in kits target a shorter lift with a simpler install. Rock Krawler's long-arm systems for the TJ, YJ, and Gladiator are built for owners already planning a full lift rather than a shock-only upgrade. Compare specs across platforms on coilovers by car and coilover brands, and see how to adjust coilovers once a kit is installed and you're setting corner weight.
FAQ
What does a coilover conversion do that a regular JK lift kit doesn't?
A coilover replaces the shock itself, so ride height is set by spring preload on an adjustable perch instead of a fixed-length spring and separate shock. That makes it easier to fine-tune ride height and corner weight, and most coilover shocks used in these kits also offer more up-travel for the same lift height.
Do I need an alignment after installing coilovers on a JK?
Yes. Changing ride height changes caster and camber on the front axle, so a front-end alignment is standard practice after any coilover or lift install, regardless of brand.
Can I run the same coilover kit on a 2-door and 4-door JK?
Several kits are sold for both body styles but with different lift figures: JKS, for example, quotes 2" of lift on 4-door JKs and 2.5" on 2-door JKs from the same front conversion, since the two body styles carry different weight at the rear axle.
Is a JK coilover kit the same part for TJ or XJ?
No. The TJ and XJ use different control-arm geometry and, on the XJ, a leaf-sprung rear rather than the JK's coil-sprung layout, so coilover conversions for those platforms are sold as separate long-arm or rear-conversion kits, not a JK part.
Will a coilover kit affect tire clearance?
Lift height from a coilover kit changes available tire clearance, but backspacing and fender trimming matter just as much. Manufacturers like Rock Krawler publish minimum wheel measurements alongside their lift specs for this reason.
Are coilovers worth it on a JK used mostly on-road?
A staged kit like ICON's 0-4" or AccuTune's tunable build lets you pick a modest lift and a street-friendly valving, which is a different tradeoff than a long-arm trail kit built around maximum articulation. Owner reports and manufacturer tuning guides both treat this as a buyer's choice based on how the Jeep is actually driven, not a one-size answer.
