Coilovers for the VW Golf and GTI
The Mk7 GTI (2015-2021) takes coilovers built on a 54.5mm front strut, with BC Racing, Godspeed, and KW offering kits that drop the car roughly 0.8 to 2 inches front and rear depending on series. Earlier Golf and GTI generations, from the Mk4 through Mk6, and the related Jetta chassis, use separate kits sized for their own strut diameters.
The specs below come from manufacturer and retailer fitment pages, not from our own installs; each row links to where we found it.

Drop by generation
Spring rates and drop ranges vary across GTI generations because the chassis, strut diameter, and stock ride height all changed. The Mk5 (2006-2009) and Mk6 (2010-2014) GTI share a platform closely enough that Megan Racing sells one Euro II Series kit (MR-CDK-GOLF5) across both, plus the related Jetta Mk6 (2011-2017, excluding S/SE trims), with a 7 kg/mm front and 5 kg/mm rear spring rate.
The Mk7 GTI (2015-2021) moved to a 54.5mm front strut and gets kits like the BC Racing BR Series (6 kg/mm front and rear, about 1-2 inches of drop from stock) or the Godspeed MonoSS (8 kg/mm front, 6 kg/mm rear). The Mk8 GTI (2022-present) uses a different strut again; KW's Variant 1 kit for this chassis is rated for 0.8-1.8 inches of drop at both ends.
See our BC Racing, Godspeed, and KW brand pages for the rest of each lineup.
Alignment, camber, and tire clearance
Any coilover kit that drops ride height below stock adds negative camber at the front, and the BC Racing and Godspeed kits for the Mk7 both ship with adjustable front camber plates to help bring that back into a usable alignment range after install. Budget for a four-wheel alignment right after fitment, not just a toe check.
At 1-2 inches of drop, most GTI owners on stock-width wheels and tires do not need spacers for clearance, but wider wheel-and-tire combinations can rub at full steering lock once camber is dialed in. See how to adjust coilovers for the order to set ride height, then damping, then alignment.
Mk4 Golf/GTI and Jetta Mk4/Mk5 coverage
Coilovers for the Mk4 Golf/GTI (1999-2005) and the related Mk4/Mk5 Jetta chassis are still sold by BC Racing, Megan Racing, and Godspeed as separate part numbers from the Mk5-Mk8 kits above, since strut diameter and mounting hardware differ by chassis code. We did not pull verified drop ranges or pricing for those older kits in this guide; check the current fitment listing on the brand's site, or browse coilovers by car for other Volkswagen applications.
Choosing between series
Entry-level kits like the Megan Racing Euro II or the Godspeed MonoSS set ride height and damping with a wrench and are priced for a daily-driven GTI. KW's Variant 1 is factory-tuned with no damping adjustment but keeps the setup simple, while higher series from the same brands add separately adjustable rebound and compression for track use.
If you want a drop without touching dampers or ride height adjustability, compare this against dedicated lowering springs for the Golf/GTI, covered in our coilovers vs. lowering springs guide.
What a 1.5" drop looks like
BC Racing's BR Series for the Mk7 GTI is rated for about 1-2 inches of drop from stock ride height, which is the most common setting owners on this chassis run.
FAQ
What coilovers fit a Mk7 GTI?
How much does a GTI drop on coilovers?
On the Mk7, BC Racing's BR Series is rated for about 1-2 inches of drop front and rear. On the Mk8, KW's Variant 1 is rated for 0.8-1.8 inches at both ends. Actual drop depends on the spring perch setting and the car's load.
Do the Mk6 GTI and Mk6 Jetta use the same coilovers?
Megan Racing sells one Euro II Series kit that covers both the Mk5/Mk6 GTI and the Mk6 Jetta (2011-2017, excluding S/SE trims), since the chassis is shared closely enough for one part number.
Are coilovers available for the Mk4 Golf, GTI, or Jetta Mk4/Mk5?
Yes. BC Racing, Megan Racing, and Godspeed all list separate Mk4-era Golf/GTI and Mk4/Mk5 Jetta kits in their lineups, with their own part numbers and strut sizing. We did not verify drop ranges or pricing for those kits in this guide, so check the current fitment page before ordering.
Will lowering a GTI on coilovers mess up alignment?
Dropping ride height adds negative camber at the front. BC Racing and Godspeed kits for the Mk7 ship with front camber plates to help correct it, but plan on a four-wheel alignment after install either way. See how to adjust coilovers.
Coilovers or lowering springs for a GTI?
Coilovers add adjustable ride height and, on higher series, adjustable damping; lowering springs are a fixed drop on the stock shocks. See our coilovers vs. lowering springs guide and the dedicated Golf/GTI lowering springs page.
