Lowering Springs for BMW
Lowering springs for BMW typically drop the car 0.5 to 1.6 inches, depending on chassis and whether it already has the factory M Sport or adaptive suspension. H&R and Eibach build chassis-specific kits for the G20 3 Series, G80/G82 M3 and M4, G30 and F10 5 Series, G01 X3 and G05 X5, each tuned around BMW's stock shock valving.
The specs below come from H&R and Eibach's own fitment catalogs and retailer listings pulled for this guide, not independent testing, so treat them as a starting point and confirm against the current catalog for your exact build before ordering.

3 Series (G20) lowering springs
The G20-generation 330i, 330i xDrive and M340i share the same CLAR-platform strut and spring design, so one H&R kit covers most trims with the drop amount changing based on which factory suspension the car left the plant with. H&R's Sport Springs (28662-1 for RWD, 28662-2 for xDrive) drop a 330i without M Sport suspension about 1.6" front and 1.5" rear. The same spring part on a car that already has factory M Sport or adaptive dampers settles closer to 1.1"-1.2" at both ends, because the M Sport shocks are shorter to start with and leave less travel to take up.
M340i models come only with M Sport suspension from the factory, so they land in that smaller 1.1"-1.2" range rather than the full 1.6" quoted for base non-sport 330i cars. Owners coming from the older E9x 3 Series who want adjustable ride height instead of fixed-rate springs can compare options on the E9x coilovers page.
M3 and M4 (G80/G82) lowering springs
Eibach's Pro-Kit for the G80 M3 sedan (RWD) drops the front 25mm (1.0") and rear 13mm (0.5"), and is engineered to work with the factory OE shocks and bump stops rather than requiring a shock swap. The Competition xDrive version uses a shorter 20mm front spring (part E10-20-049-10-22) to offset the added weight of the all-wheel-drive front-axle hardware, landing around 0.8" front and 0.5" rear.
On the G82 M4 Competition xDrive coupe, Eibach's E10-20-049-09-22 kit drops about 0.9" front and 0.5" rear. The noticeably smaller rear drop on both the M3 and M4 kits is intentional: the G8x chassis loses rear camber quickly once the rear ride height comes down, so Eibach keeps the rear closer to stock to protect tire wear and rear-end grip. See coilovers vs. lowering springs if you want rear height to be adjustable instead of fixed.
5 Series (G30 and F10) lowering springs
On the current G30 5 Series, Eibach's Pro-Kit (E10-20-038-01-22) fits the 530i, 530i xDrive, 530e and 540i and drops the car close to an inch front and rear, but it explicitly excludes cars with factory EDC electronic damper control; those need a kit built around adaptive dampers instead. On the previous-generation F10 (2011-2016), Eibach's Pro-Kit for the 528i xDrive and 535i xDrive quotes a 1.2" drop, while H&R's Sport Spring sets for the F10 are commonly listed around 1.4" front and 1.3" rear depending on the exact trim.
Because the F10 ran for five model years with several suspension revisions (standard steel springs, M Sport, Dynamic Damper Control, self-leveling rear air on some Touring and xDrive variants), always match the part number to your car's build rather than assuming one F10 kit covers every 535i.
X3 and X5 lowering springs
H&R's Sport Springs for the G01 X3 xDrive30i and X3 M40i with factory M Sport suspension (part 28926-1) drop the front 1.4" and the rear 0.8", a bigger front-to-rear split than the sedans because of the X3's higher factory ride height and front overhang. For the G05 X5, H&R's lowering springs (28634-2) drop around 1.0" (35mm) front and rear on xDrive40i, 50i and M50i models, with a different-rate variant for cars carrying heavier front-axle loads.
Some X5 trims come with self-leveling air springs at the rear instead of steel coils; steel lowering springs cannot be installed on those cars. If your X5 has rear air suspension, check the air suspension guide before shopping for a lowering spring kit.
Alignment, camber and tire clearance
Any amount of drop on a BMW changes camber and toe, so budget for a full alignment right after install, not just a toe check. On 3 Series and M3/M4 cars that go past about an inch of front drop, the factory camber adjustment range often runs out; aftermarket camber/caster plates or camber bolts bring it back into an alignment-friendly range on cars that need more negative camber than stock hardware allows.
Staggered factory wheel and tire packages generally clear a 1"-1.5" drop on sedans without rubbing, but X3 and X5 owners running larger aftermarket wheels should check fender liner and strut-to-tire clearance at full steering lock before committing to a kit. A spring compressor or spanner wrench makes the spring swap itself straightforward; the install guide below covers the labor side in more detail.
Full step-by-step install labor and cost expectations are covered in the lowering springs installation and cost guide.
FAQ
How much do lowering springs drop a BMW?
It depends on chassis and factory suspension. Sedans like the G20 3 Series and G30/F10 5 Series typically drop 1.0"-1.6" with non-adaptive factory suspension, while M3/M4 (G80/G82) kits are tuned closer to 0.8"-1.0" front and 0.5" rear to protect handling and tire wear. Crossovers like the X3 and X5 land around 1.0"-1.4" front.
Do lowering springs work on BMWs with adaptive (EDC) suspension?
Usually not. Several Eibach and H&R kits for the G30 5 Series and G20 3 Series explicitly exclude cars with factory Dynamic Damper Control or adaptive M suspension, because those dampers are valved and sized for a specific stock spring rate. Check the part listing for your exact trim before buying.
Will I need an alignment after installing lowering springs on a BMW?
Yes. Dropping the ride height changes camber and toe on every BMW chassis covered here. Past roughly an inch of front drop on 3 Series and M3/M4 cars, the factory camber adjustment range can run out, so budget for camber bolts or adjustable camber/caster plates in addition to the alignment itself.
What's the difference between lowering springs and coilovers for a BMW?
Lowering springs replace just the spring and reuse the factory (or a specified aftermarket) shock, giving a fixed drop at a lower cost. Coilovers replace the whole strut/shock assembly and let you dial in ride height and often damping, at a higher price point.
Can I put lowering springs on an X5 or X3 with air suspension?
No. Steel lowering springs only fit BMWs with a steel coil spring at that axle. X5 and X3 trims with factory self-leveling air springs at the rear need an air suspension solution instead of a spring swap.
Which BMW generations does this page cover?
The G20 3 Series (330i, M340i), G80/G82 M3 and M4, the G30 and F10 5 Series, the G01 X3 and the G05 X5. Older chassis like the E46 and E9x 3 Series are covered on their own coilover pages rather than here.
